Our Massage Modalities

Modalities are the different styles and schools of massage therapy training. You can think of modalities as tools inside the therapist’s toolbox, and you can choose from a variety of techniques in order to address your specific needs.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a gentle, full-body modality designed for relaxation and increased circulation and uses long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, and tapping to loosen tight muscles, relieve tension, and improve overall well-being. It’s the most popular form of massage therapy and often considered a standard “basic” massage, using oil or lotion to facilitate smooth movements over the skin.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic modality that uses firm, sustained pressure and slow, deep strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue (fascia). It’s effective for relieving chronic muscle tension and pain by breaking down adhesions (knots) and scar tissue, thereby improving flexibility and range of motion.

Acupressure

Acupressure is a Traditional Chinese Medicine massage practice that involves applying steady pressure to specific points on the body, called points or acupoints, to release blockages in the body’s energy flow (Qi) and promote healing and well-being. It is non-invasive and aims to reduce stress, relieve pain, improve sleep, and address issues like nausea and headaches by stimulating the release of endorphins and increasing blood circulation.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese Acupressure which applies sustained and rhythmic pressure to points along meridian pathways in order to promote relaxation, reduce pain, and improve health by restoring the balance of the body’s energy.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a focused therapeutic technique using deep pressure, stretching, and other modalities to enhance athletic performance, speed recovery, and prevent injuries by releasing muscle tension, improving blood flow, and increasing flexibility. It is typically tailored to individuals with high activity levels and incorporates various techniques such as kneading, friction, and compression to address the specific stresses of physical exertion and repetitive motion.

Myofascial Cupping

Myofascial cupping uses negative pressure from suction cups to lift and stretch skin and fascia, releasing tight muscles and improving circulation to reduce pain and inflammation. Unlike other manual therapies that compress tissue, cupping creates a gentle pressure gradient through suction that pulls tissues apart, encouraging blood flow, hydrating fascia, and increasing range of motion. The process often involves placing cups on specific areas of tension and moving them across the skin or leaving them stationary for a few minutes at a time.

Hand & Foot Reflexology

Reflexology is a massage modality involving working on specific points on the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to other areas of the body (including organs, systems, and different regions of the body) with the goal of promoting relaxation, improving energy flow, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Benefits of Massage

Physical Benefits

Reduces Muscle Tension and Pain: massage manipulates soft tissues, loosening stiffened muscles and joints to alleviate pain and soreness.
Increases Flexibility: while relaxing muscles and tendons, massage makes joints more supple and improves range of motion.
Improved Circulation: direct manual manipulation improves the flow of both blood and lymph at the site, supplying muscles and tissues with more oxygen and nutrients while helping to remove cellular waste products.
Boosts Immune Function: Regular massage can strengthen the immune system by reducing stress and improving circulation of blood and lymph.

Mental & Emotional Benefits

Assists with Stress & Anxiety Relief: Massage lowers cortisol, a stress hormone, and promotes relaxation, which can reduce levels of anxiety.
Improves Sleep: By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, massage therapy can significantly improve the quality of sleep.
Enhances Mental Clarity: Reduced stress and improved circulation contribute to better cognitive function, leading to increased focus and clearer thinking.
Boosts Mood: Massage can increase the production of mood-boosting hormones like serotonin.
